London Fashion Week Themes
The key themes for Fall/Winter 2022 seen at London Fashion Week.
Period Drama
London designers embraced the darkness of the past by including deep tones, lace and sheer fabrics, and corsetry details in their collections. They juxtaposed dark and heavy fabrics with soft and sheer details. Romantic historical silhouettes included full skirts, puff sleeves and capes. As per usual, Simone Rocha featured velvet dresses with voluminous sleeves with bare midriffs, along with jeweled knit balaclavas—the accessory of the moment.
Erdem sent out models in intricate lace and satin looks, styled with studded gloves and oxfords. David Koma utilized leather to create fascinating silhouettes with a romantic twist. Bora Aksu paired historial silhouettes with a hint of grunge—some of the dresses were created with upcycled cutoffs of broderie anglaise and moire silk. Likewise, at Preen by Thornton Bregazzi researched youth subcultures of the 20th century to create repurposed designs—often including patchwork.
Body-Conscious
After the pandemic restrictions on the dress code, women are keen to express themselves reflected in the use of body-conscious apparel and cutouts. Nensi Dojaka created lingerie-like looks appropriate for daytime featuring asymmetrical cutouts and see through fabrics. Mark Fast fused raver and sportswear motifs, his assortment included mostly skin tight knit dresses along with practical basics. Poster Girl featured neon pink cut-out catsuits to highlight the female form.
Y2K
Y2K remains in the top of mind of designers featuring low-slung skirts & pants, baring midriffs, & slinky silhouettes. Seen in designers such as Supriya Lele, Poster Girl, Connor Ives and Ahluwalia. This trend has all the fun!
