The Great Rebellion
Designers rebelled this season & elevated gothic dressing. Ragged pieces, leather and raver-inspired looks were noteworthy amongst many designers. Chris Leba of R13 experimented with structure and included baggy silhouettes in his collection. Coach reimagined edgy looks featuring graffiti inspired prints. Marc Jacobs' collection was grounded in black and white looks featuring distressed fabrics and floor-sweeping skirts. Gothic designs at Elena Velez’ s were reminiscent of Victorian women with boning, straps & sheer fabrications in dresses and peasant blouses—the latter often cinched by deconstructed corsets.
On the other hand, Collina Strada presented a colorful take on the grunge aesthetic of the early 2000s with mesh tops and graphic tees paired with low rise cargo pants. Also played with fabrics, particularly chiffon, to create fringe or a feather effect.
New American
Impeccably clean lines and modern tailoring make up this sportswear look. Michael Kors made a statement with monochromatic American sportswear looks. Gabriela Hearst suggested we head back to the office with a bang with an assortment of blouses, skirts and suits that can easily be turned into a drinks after work look and beyond.
LaQuan Smith was inspired by the exuberance of Studio 54, featuring sequins, mink coats and short skirts. Helmut Lang’s foundation is in minimal tailoring. At Peter Do, the suit is back, and this time around he balanced sharp tailoring looks with pleated skirts. Brandon Maxwell combined comfort and glamour in this collection.
Ballroom Ready
A modern interpretation of Old Hollywood style, extravagant dresses with full skirts represent the other side to fall and winter’s vintage-inspired femininity. Carolina Herrera added corsetry to eveningwear. Jason Wu presented his own version of the 1950s voluminous dress. Christian Siriano’s assortment varied from billowing ball gowns to elegant tea-length dresses. Brandon Maxwell reinterpreted the ball gown by pairing a cable knit sweater and a full skirt.
Look to these silhouettes for special occasions, nonetheless shorter designs work for daytime events.
